Rachel Varnhagen

b. 1771, Berlin; d. 1833, Berlin

The correct spelling of this name is RAHEL VARNHAGEN.

Born into a wealthy Jewish family, Rahel Varnhagen hosted the most impressive literary soirées in Berlin, attended by many of the Romantic writers. After her death, her husband, Karl August Varnhagen von Ense, collected, edited, and published her diaries and correspondence as Rahel: Ein Buch des Andenkens für ihre Freunde (Rahel: A Memorial Book for Her Friends) in 1834.
