Studio Art Program
Registration for spring 2026 is now open!
The Studio Art Program offers fun and challenging art-making classes for ages 6 to 96. Be inspired by professional teaching artists, discuss artworks in our exhibitions and collections, develop skills and techniques, and create your own art using new and traditional materials. Each semester ends with a student exhibition in our Education Gallery. Make art, make friends, and make memories at the Museum!

Schedule for spring 2026:
Saturdays: February 28–May 23 (no class April 4 or 11 or May 9)
Sundays: March 1–May 24 (no class April 5 or 12 or May 10)
Youth and teens: 10 classes for $335; Members: $300 (join today!)
Adults: 10 classes: $375; Members: $340 (join today!)
Scholarships are available for all youth and teen classes on a first-come, first-served basis. After applying, you’ll be notified by email if you are eligible for discounted registration
Ages 6–7
Sculpture: Everything Is Art
Saturdays, 10:30 am–12:30 pm
Be inspired by artists such as Alison Kuo who use everyday materials to create marvelous artworks, from cat figurines to beaded necklaces. Doodle, carve, build, scribble, splatter, and scratch to make art out of anything and everything. Grow your technical skills while experimenting and having fun.
Painting: Make a Splash
Sundays, 10:30 am–12:30 pm
Dive into a colorful world of sea life and art. Visit Oliver Jeffers: Life at Sea and get inspired to both create whimsical art and be a climate advocate. Learn the elements of art and mark-making, and then depict your favorite sea creature in watercolor. Use your new skills to encourage others to help make oceans a better home for our animal friends.
Ages 8–10
Sculpture: Tombs and Treasures
Saturdays, 10:30 am–12:30 pm
Travel with care as you uncover the secrets and treasures of ancient Egyptian tombs. Consider how cultures around the world have created masks and vessels as forms of protection. Next, get messy and have fun using clay, plaster, and wire to build unique 3D forms, featuring symbols of things that are important to you and your community.
Painting: The Color of Community
Sundays, 10:30 am–12:30 pm
Become a pro at portraits and landscapes. Harness the power of the color wheel and create impactful artworks that represent the people and places you care about. Inspired by Susan Chen’s Chinatown Block Watch, play with hues, shades, and tints to make vibrant paintings that capture your community’s unique character.
Ages 11–13
Animation: Myths and Legends
Saturdays, 1:30–3:30 pm
Explore a world of make believe and fantasy while learning about ancient stories from around the world. Visit our Egyptian and Arts of Asia galleries, and see how people throughout time have used myths and legends to develop cultural identities. Learn narrative and stop-motion techniques to create videos on an iPad, and build clay creatures to craft your own origin story.
Painting: Portfolio Development
Sundays, 1:30–3:30 pm
Gain all the skills necessary for a strong art high school application—or simply learn for the love of art! This class will cover fundamentals for budding young artists, whatever your goals may be. Master techniques such as color theory and brushwork, and design original compositions. Find inspiration in our galleries and give your pieces a special Brooklyn Museum touch to set your portfolio apart from the rest.
Ages 14–18
Painting: Color Outside the Lines
Saturdays, 1:30–3:30 pm
Can a painting be made without a brush? Learn to use photos, beads, and spray paint to create mixed-media works on canvas. Study color theory, texture, and composition as you look for hidden objects in works such as Revolutionary (Angela Davis) by Wadsworth Jarrell. Make your own portraits using materials that set your work apart.
Adults
Painting: The Story of Art
Saturdays, 10:30 am–12:30 pm or 1:30–3:30 pm
Journey to every corner of the Brooklyn Museum to find powerful and surprising stories in works of art. Expand your knowledge of a wide variety of art materials, including papers and paints. Use a sketchbook to develop your own painting style, track your growth as an artist, and tell your story.
Printmaking: Resistance Reimagined
Sundays, 1:30–3:30 pm
How does personal experience connect to social change? Learn basic carving and inking techniques with linocut, and then use more advanced collage and mixed-media methods to combine image and text in prints that share your message. Visit our exhibition Everyday Rebellions and see how contemporary artists give shape to the feminist mantra “The personal is political.”
Drawing: Objects of Reflection
Sundays, 1:30–3:30 pm
Art becomes a tool for meditation in this class inspired by the Rubin Museum Tibetan Buddhist Shrine Room. Learn to create dynamic compositions as you practice proportion, shading, and blending. Sharpen your pencils and your skills as you make art with graphite and ink. End the semester with a series of still lifes highlighting personal objects that hold special meaning.
