Object Label

Buddhism spread from India to the islands of Southeast Asia on merchant ships along with other aspects of Indian culture. Rulers on the island of Java supported both Hinduism and Buddhism. The island’s most famous Buddhist monument, Borobudur, was constructed about the same time as this sculpture. Here the Buddha raises one hand to make the gesture of teaching; in an Indonesian context this gesture may identify the subject as a Buddha named Vairochana.
