Frequent Art Questions
Who's Meleager?
Meleager is a mythic hero from the Ancient Greece. As you may have noticed in this gallery, Ancient Greek and Egyptian subjects were popular in Decorative Arts from the 19th and early 20th century. Thanks! You're welcome! Meleager's story is described in the Iliad. He was a prince of Calydonia who defended his people against wild boar set upon them by Artemis in response to the king's neglect of a sacrifice.Sounds like Artemis could be over-sensitive at times. Many Greek myths are definitely very emotionally charged! The Ancient Greeks explained their world by being at the will of these fickle gods.
