Tara

16th century

Object Label

Worship of Tara spread from India to the Himalayas and Mongolia. This Nepalese image was probably part of a trio, with two Taras flanking a central image of the Buddha of wisdom, Manjushri. Unlike most metal images in this gallery, which were cast in molds, this piece was made from sheets of metal that were hammered and cut and then pinned together to create a three-dimensional form.
