  • December 3, 1957 Old Polish Prints - A Christmas Exhibition will open December 3 to remain on view in a second floor gallery through January 26. A dozen woodcuts made by unknown folk artists of the 18th and 19th centuries are colorful and charming interpretations of Saints and Madonnas, such as Holy Mary Zdzieszewskiey, and Saint Katearzini. These prints are modern restrikes from the original blocks and are on extended loan to the Museum from Dr. Irena Piotrowska. They are similar in their decorative, popular, somewhat primitive approach, as if made in a single locality where inter-influence was easy; several show Polish churches with domes in the backgrounds, others include stylized lightning bolts, clouds, floral decorations. The imaginative minds of these artists have taken certain liberties with the accepted versions of the Saints’ lives and symbols, and have re-interpreted them to tell a more dramatic story.
