  • June 20, 1974 New British Printmakers, an exhibition of 76 prints by 18 young artists, opens at The Brooklyn Museum on Wednesday, June 26, and will remain on view through August 25.

Printmaking has enjoyed a healthy revival in Great Britain in recent years, comparable to that seen in the United States, and has attracted a number of young artists working in a variety of media. With the emergence of important print publishers in the 1950’s and 60’s, the level of professional printmaking was raised substantially, but other factors have played a part more recently in the growing interest in the prints of younger artists.

Better printmaking facilities are available in increasing numbers of art schools, and the influx of printing studios has brought with it expert printers, technical experimentation and a healthy competition, which has led to the production of work of high quality. The print media have also attracted painters and sculptors, and this has raised the standards of quality through approaches free of well-learned technical tricks, and has encouraged innovation and further removed printmaking from the connotations of craft.

Commenting on the exhibition, Nancy Tousley, Assistant Curator of the Department of Prints and Drawings, notes that the work of the young artists reflects “... the great diversity of British print production and an interest in ‘Pop’ and photo-derived imagery. Two mediums dominate: etching and screenprint.

“Etching is handled quite traditionally and with interesting use of photo images. The ubiquitous screenprint, well represented here by seven artists, is handled with skill in the production of very different images and effects. One German artist, Gerd Winner, has been included because of his close collaboration with Chris Prater of Kelpra Studios, with whom he has printed all of his screenprints.” Prater has been very much involved with the return of prints to respectability, and he can be credited with a large part of the healthy and productive climate surrounding British printmaking today.

Other artists included in the exhibition, whose works are already in U. S. public and private collections, are: Norman Ackroyd, Jeffrey Edwards, John Walker, Norman Stevens and Terence Millington.
