Catalogue Description:
Teapot with hinged cover; silver, cast and repoussé decoration; part of a six-piece tea and coffee service (75.164.1-.6). Circular stepped base with inset stem supporting cylindrical body, narrowing toward top with narrow neck and broadening flange collar around top. High arched handle terminating at top with double snake with sphinx head beneath with claw terminal at bottom; ivory band set on handle. Almost vertical spout with foliate decoration at base and woman's face at spout opening. Hinged dome lid with broad brim. Stylized pineapple and vine repoussé decoration on dome. Finial is a feline figure seated on a disc supporting at front an oval shield. Repoussé decoration on body consists of band of stylized acanthus around bottom, almond-shaped lozenge on side surrounded by stylized acanthus enclosing cupid figure. Identical lozenge on reverse enclosing engraved monogram: "MAC". Raised or cast molding around base of neck and top flange. CONDITION: Excellent; finial loose, minor scratches.
