Catalogue Description: An enthroned ruler seated under a canopy and royal umbrella offers a pearl and emerald turban ornament to a courtier who stands before him holding a letter. The nine other figures surrounding the ruler include his arms bearer, attendants with swords and shields, a white bearded elder and a boy holding the umbrella. The ruler and attending figures wear large turbans that make reference to those worn in Central Asia and Iran in the 16th century, a style that that was no longer in use at the time when the image was painted. So it appears that the painting depicts an earlier moment in history, possibly the Mughal emperor Babur, who reigned from 1526-30.
