Standing Shiva with His Mount Nandi

Renowned as India's classical age, the Gupta period saw the refinement of many of India's visual art traditions. This finely realized sculpture from the early Gupta period shows the Hindu deity Shiva and his humped bull Nandi. Legendary for his supreme ascetic powers, Shiva is depicted in a full frontal pose, holding a rosary, a trident, and an orb which symbolizes the seed of the universe.
