Seated Buddha

Asian Art

On View: Asian Galleries, Southwest, 2nd floor
Most Buddhists in Thailand practice Theravada, an ancient school of thought that emphasizes the deeds and teachings of the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni. Here he is shown at a key moment, when he touches the ground just prior to gaining enlightenment. In the Sukhothai period, patrons and sculptors developed a distinctive style for depicting the Buddha, with broad shoulders, long and curvaceous fingers and toes, and a large flame coming from the ushnisha.
