Seated Buddha

Asian Art

On View: Asian Galleries, Southwest, 2nd floor
Sri Lanka was one of the first regions to adopt Buddhism as it spread from its Indian birthplace. This Sri Lankan icon shares many features with the adjacent large stone piece, which was made in northern India three hundred years earlier. As in many regions that adopted Buddhism, Sri Lanka began by looking to India for guidance and then developed distinct aesthetic traditions over time.
