In this eerie still life, Marsden Hartley suspended a white seagull against a dark background. The artist used gulls, crabs, and lobsters in his work as icons of his New England roots. Near the end of his life, Hartley attempted to restyle himself as a painter from Maine, much as Georgia O’Keeffe had become associated with New Mexico. Indeed, the quiet stillness of his gull calls to mind the floating skull in O’Keeffe’s Ram’s Head, White Hollyhock— Hills, at right. Both Hartley and O’Keeffe belonged to Alfred Stieglitz’s circle of artists, who sought to create modern art that was spiritually rooted to the American soil.
