Another Time (Ɣebubuɣi)

Atta Kwami

Arts of Africa

This schematic painting, created in Atta Kwami’s signature “Kumasi Realism” style, draws as much from urban Ghana’s dynamism and architecture as it does from music and Ewe kente fabrics. Its blocky, streaked color fields reflect his study of these strip-woven textiles. Their diverse sizes evoke time’s variability, referencing the work’s Ewe language title Ɣebubuɣi. Kwami writes, “the internal dynamics of the picture convey the complexity of rhythm in African music, jazz improvisation, and textiles, which were a major part of my formation as an artist."
