Fin du travail (The End of the Working Day)

Jules Breton’s image shows three monumental figures of French women, dramatically backlit by a sunset, returning from their day’s work in the potato fields. This idealized and heroic portrayal of field workers reflects the impact of the democratic Revolution of 1848 on artists later in the century. The painter himself said that "art was to do [the workers] the honor formerly reserved exclusively for the gods."
