Carpet with Garden Design

Arts of the Islamic World

This carpet, made in northwest Iran in the eighteenth century, is based on a type first produced in central Iran during the previous century. Known as a garden carpet, it represents a stylized version of a traditional Persian garden, with landscaped sections divided by pools and channels of water. Flowering shrubs dot the field, while small fish inhabit the central pool of water, depicted as a series of zigzagging lines.
