Oriental Hotel, Coney Island

George Bradford Brainerd

The Oriental Hotel, located in Manhattan Beach at the eastern end of Coney Island, opened in 1880, catering specifically to a wealthier clientele who did not want to mingle with the site’s growing crowds. Its owner, the capitalist Austin Corbin, organized the addition of an extension of the Long Island Rail Road to the hotel in 1876 to increase access from Manhattan. The photographer George Bradford Brainerd took this image of the hotel from the boardwalk, while both the building and the boardwalk were still under construction.
