Unknown

European Art

The wealthy Mexican sitter in this nineteenth-century portrait from the Brooklyn Museum collection wears a European-style velvet and lace dress and a gold torzale with a sliding brooch like a Mexican bolo, while she adorns her center-parted hair with flowers. Her appearance anticipates the hybrid sartorial image that Kahlo crafted for herself, drawing from her own European and Mexican heritage.
