Cool Picture: View of Mt. Fuji

Utagawa Hiroshige (Ando)

Asian Art

Hiroshige adopts a bird’s-eye view of the planes surrounding Mt. Fuji in order to provide a sense of the vastness of the landscape and of the mountain’s stately presence. The title on this extremely rare print reads Suzushiga, or “Cool Picture,” a reference to the effect created by Hiroshige’s use of an all-blue palette. Another unusual feature of the print is its prominent display of the publisher’s name, Hananotsuyu Tamakichi, along the left edge of the composition.
