Catalogue Description: Terracotta window ornaments from Scoville Building, Chicago. Seven pieces total: set of 3 matching rectangular over window spandrels; one 4-piece lunette (with hub and 3 curved triangular sections). Built 1875; facade remodeling by Adler and Sullivan, 1884; demolished 1978. Condition (2011): Excellent. Some paint flaking, but otherwise terra cotta is in great condition. Two types, A and B: Lunette shaped: above window ornament with three curled trendrils emanating from shell shaped object at base. Made of 4 pieces: three pie-wedges with shell as a hub at center. Type B is a rectangular shaped above window ornament, with 3 sets of 2 spandrels. Each spandrel depicts a plant made of 3 stylized palmetto leaves emanating from a leafy base. Ornamentation located over windows on top floor of building facade. In all, there are 4 sets of 6 rectangular spandrels over 12 center windows (or 12 sets of 2); and 4 lunettes at each end, 1 each over 4 windows.
