Catalogue Description:
Shelf Clock. Gothic Revival cast-iron front resembling a cathedral facade. Rectangular, box-like, black painted wooden case with brass 8-day spring driven movement (cast metal pendulum with a hollow wand and a circular base). Cast-relief decoration begins at the top of the front with three trefoil shaped pointed arches ornamented with stylized foliate motifs. Two side arches terminate in foliate finials; the central arch terminates in a fleur-de-lys finial. Two tapering half columns divided into three sections extend the height of the clock front sides. The upper section of the tapering columns consists of a six-sided obelisk terminating in an obelisk finial. In the central section, a trefoil shaped column sits atop a six-sided column inset with pointed arches terminating in obelisk finials. The lower section consists of a rounded base inset with trefoil shaped pointed arch. Cast in relief in the base of the clock, between the lower sections of the columns, are two trefoil shaped pointed arches. The arches flank the circular glass and brass pendulum cover. Inset into the central panel of the clock front is a concave and circular iron dial. The dial is painted ivory and beige with black roman hour numerals and fleur-de-lys hour and minute hands. The dial is attached to the front with four screws. Hinged to the right proper of the dial is a brass rim. Mechanisms for winding are located at five o'clock and seven o'clock. A landscape scene containing castles, figures and palm trees is painted on panel surrounding the dial. CONDITION - Fair. Iron rusting and dulled surface exhibits signs of chipping and cracking. Paint chipping off dial and brass rim surrounding dial-missing glass. Wood case chipped. Losses to landscape scene.
