French composer Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre began her musical career at the age of five, playing the harpsichord and singing at the court of Louis XIV. She became well known throughout Paris for her performances and her teaching, and composed twelve sacred cantatas as well as secular pieces, including Cantates françoises (1708, 1711), in addition to numerous instrumental compositions, such as Les pièces de clavessin (1687). Jacquet de la Guerre is recognized as the first woman in France to compose an opera.
