Jenny Lind

b. 1820, Stockholm; d. 1887, Wynds Point, Herefordshire, England

Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind was immensely popular throughout Europe and the United States. Nicknamed “the Swedish nightingale” for her naturally beautiful singing style, Lind performed regularly in Stockholm throughout the 1840s, and also sang in Berlin, Vienna, London, and Munich. After leaving the operatic stage in 1849, she continued to give concerts, touring the United States and performing in Germany and England, where she settled in 1858. In her later years, Lind taught at the prestigious Royal College of Music in London and dedicated herself to philanthropic activities.
