Film: Dayton Jones and Shaft

Thursday, November 29, 2018

7 pm

Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Auditorium, 3rd Floor

In honor of our special exhibition Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power, filmmaker Nelson George introduces a screening that pairs his new film Dayton Jones with the classic film that shaped the blaxploitation genre. Shaft (Gordon Parks, 1971, 100 min.) follows the adventures of Harlem private detective John Shaft when he is hired to rescue an Italian mobster’s daughter.

Dayton Jones (Nelson George, 2017, 10 min.) revisits the era with the title character, who used to be badass in the '70s. Now, in 1981, he settles insurance claims in Chocolate City (aka Washington, D.C.) until his quiet life is upended by two meetings that bring him face to face with a past he wants to forget.
