Still from the film When I Come Home

Still from When I Get Home (Solange Knowles, 2019, 41 min.)

Film: When I Get Home SOLD OUT

Thursday, July 18, 2019

7–7:30 pm

Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Auditorium, 3rd Floor

This event is now sold out.

We are proud to present an extended version of visual artist and singer-songwriter Solange Knowles's interdisciplinary performance-art film When I Get Home, an exploration of personal origin as well as a spiritual expedition. The film confronts how much of ourselves we take or leave behind in our evolution, and how much is determined by fear. Returning to her home state of Texas, Knowles makes an expedition to a futurist rodeo. The film's visual meditation uplifts the narrative of Black cowboys and honors the artist's Houston lineage.

When I Get Home is directed and edited by Knowles with contributing directors Alan Ferguson, Terence Nance, Jacolby Satterwhite, and Ray Tintori. Additional work courtesy of Houston artists Autumn Knight and Robert Pruitt and featuring new musical arrangements. The film also features new sculpture by the artist, Boundless Body (2019), an 8x10-foot rodeo arena displayed in the desert of Marfa, which sits alongside many architectural wonders that are in the film, including the Rothko Chapel at the Menil Collection and the I.M. Pei–designed Dallas City Hall.

The film is being screened exclusively at partner institutions in the United States and Europe starting July 17, 2019.

Tickets are $10 and include Museum admission. Member tickets are complimentary.
