Film and Discussion

Saturday, January 12, 2008, 2–5 pm

The Plow that Broke the Plains  (Pare Lorentz, 1936, 25 min., NR) is a beautiful documentary short featuring the Great Plains and Dust Bowl of the United States and Canada. A discussion drawing on the parallels between filming and painting landscapes with Terry Carbone, curator of the special exhibition Brushed with Light , and film historian Foster Hirsch of Brooklyn College, follows. The program ends with the iconic film The Misfits  (John Huston, 1961,124 min., NR) by screenwriter Arthur Miller, starring Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable, a poignant drama about the death of the old West, set in the expansive mid-century Nevada landscape.
