Film Screening: My Perestroika

Thursday, May 5, 2011

7–7 pm

Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Auditorium, 3rd Floor

My Perestroika (Robin Hessman, 2010, 87 min.). The story of five former Moscow schoolmates living in post-Soviet Russia, offering glimpses of daily life, Soviet propaganda films, and vintage home movies. The people in My Perestroika represent the invisible, ordinary citizens of Moscow—raising children in a world they couldn’t have imagined in their wildest dreams. They share stories of their Soviet childhoods and the huge changes engendered by perestroika (restructuring), and allow us to see the true nature of contemporary Russian life.

In exploring the unheralded lives of the last generation of Soviets to grow up behind the Iron Curtain, director Robin Hessman reveals the contradictions and complexities of modern Russia from the inside out. There will be a Q&A with Hessman after the film.

This event is a collaboration with the award-winning documentary series POV. Free with Museum admission. As seating is limited, advance ticket purchase for general admission and a reserved seat at the screening is recommended at www.museumtix.com.
