Teacher Workshop: MLK Day of Action
Join us for our annual day of action with a series of professional development workshops for educators in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. In this year’s program, examine how you can use art in your classroom to address student criminalization and the school-to-prison pipeline.
These workshops will explore different New York City–based organizations that use art as a tool for healing. Join Niles Mattier, Associate Manager of Teacher Services, in a guided gallery experience and practice close-looking strategies for analyzing art with students. Educators are also invited to participate in an art-making workshop with trauma-informed visual artist Azeya Webb and learn how to apply restorative-justice art approaches in the classroom. Both gallery and art-making sessions will be offered simultaneously in the morning and afternoon. Then, explore restorative-justice practices in a talk and Q&A with Terrence Winston, Certified Restorative Justice Practitioner, Community Organizer/Builder, and Youth Development Specialist, and consider how we can repair harm and rebuild relationships in our school communities.
