Emily Faithful

b. 1835, Surrey, England; d. 1895, Manchester, England

The correct spelling of this name is EMILY FAITHFULL.

Journalist, editor, and feminist Emily Faithfull founded the Victoria Press in 1860 to provide training and employment opportunities for women in the printing trade. Through the press she published Victoria Magazine (1863–80), which ran articles on women’s issues; Women and Work (1874–76), a weekly newspaper that listed work and emigration opportunities in the colonies; and West London Express (1877–78). Faithfull frequently toured the United States on the lecture circuit. Her articles about these experiences abroad provide insight into the conditions of nineteenth-century American women.
