Mythic, worshipped in Norway, exact dates uncertain
Hel was queen of the Norwegian underworld, which was also named Hel. The daughter of Loki, god of mischief, and Angrbooa, a giantess, she was banished by the chief god Odin along with the rest of her siblings. She was given the underworld and authority over its occupants and was aided by her watchdog Germ, who was fastened at the gates. The English word “hell” is derived from her name.
