Phile

Flourished circa 50 B.C.E., Priene, ancient Greece

Phile was elected the first woman magistrate (judicial officer) in the city of Priene because, with her own money, she installed a much-needed cistern and a system of water pipes. Her beneficence was documented in an inscription on a monument erected in her honor.
