Sofia Kovalevskaya

b. 1850, Moscow; d. 1891, Stockholm

Sofia Kovalevsky was an exceptional mathematician who in 1883 became a professor at the University of Stockholm, a liberal institution willing to hire women. Kovalevskaya received top awards and honors in her field, including the Prix Bordin of the French Academy of Sciences in 1888.
