William Trost Richards

Brooklyn Museum photograph

Object Label

The prolific William Trost Richards was a leading figure of both the American Pre-Raphaelites and the American Watercolor Movement. His watercolors regularly won critical acclaim for their plein air effects and strong compositions. The geological specificity of the rugged coastline depicted here demonstrates his commitment to the Ruskinian doctrine of fidelity to nature.
