Omer Dewavrin

Auguste Rodin

Object Label

Had it not been for the firm support of this sitter, Rodin’s monument to the burghers of Calais might never have existed. Omer Dewavrin served as mayor of Calais and as president of the monument committee. In this capacity in 1884 he advocated that Rodin be selected to create the monument. Forthright, unidealized, and focused on character, the bust exemplifies naturalist nineteenth-century portraiture.
