Funerary Mask
Chimú
Object Label
To judge from the holes and textile impressions still visible on the back, this hammered silver mask with embossed features and an attached nose was sewn onto a Chimú mummy bundle. Highly skilled artisans in the vast capital city of Chan Chan produced such gold and silver ornaments for the elite of the Chimú empire, which flourished along the North and Central Coasts of Peru from 900 to 1470.
