In the Park, Light

George Wesley Bellows

Brooklyn Museum photograph

Object Label

Early in his career, Bellows was known for depicting young street urchins, dockworkers, and boxers, but later he also painted the more affluent classes at polo matches and elegant Central Park picnics, as seen here. In a second version of the print, In the Park, Dark, Bellows made the foliage background dark and indistinct. The lithographs revive a subject he had undertaken in the oil painting A Day in June, 1913 (Detroit Museum of Art).
