Emaciated Buddha

19th–early 20th century

Brooklyn Museum photograph

Object Label

The subject of the ascetic Siddhartha became popular in Thailand in the late nineteenth century, likely inspired by photographs of ancient sculptures of the same subject that had been found in Pakistan. Like their ancient prototypes, Thai representations have prominent veins and feature wavy hair instead of tight curls.
