Egyptian potters often introduced new shapes that flourished for only a few generations. By studying the changes in pottery design, archaeologists are able to date vessels to specific periods and sometimes to individual dynasties. Pots like this vessel, with its beveled rim and squat, carinated body, are unique to the Second Intermediate Period.
