Myers was particularly known for his paintings of children at play in the parks, playgrounds, and streets of the Lower East Side. Though he was often accused of “cleaning up” his tenement children, depicting them with a “picture book” quality that belied the dinginess of their poor neighborhood, Myers preferred to focus on their youthful abandon and merriment rather than on any sordidness of their immediate environment.
