Object Label

John La Farge labored over this small painting. He began by making an elaborate, careful drawing on the prepared panel using pen or pencil. The drawn lines describe the outlines of the forms and their essential details. The paint was gradually applied in layers ranging from thick, textured strokes to thin, translucent glazes. La Farge made several changes to the composition as he worked, including painting out a large flower left of center.
