Change of Residence (Changement de Residence)

Paul Gauguin

Brooklyn Museum photograph

Object Label

Paul Gauguin based this composition on details of a sculptural relief from the eighth– to ninth-century temple complex of Borobudur, in central Java, Indonesia, which he knew from a photograph in his possession. The hands of the three Tahitian women on the left form the mudra position namaskara, a gesture of greeting and adoration, in imitation of three Buddhist monks in the relief.
