Frequent Art Questions

  • Is this Chinese or American?

The blue and white decoration is definitely inspired by Chinese pottery, but the sweet rabbit decoration was a signature of the Massachusetts based Dedham Pottery. The company was around from 1872 to 1943 and was greatly influenced by seeing Asian ceramics at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876.
  • I saw a lot of woodland creature scenes in blue and white in Amsterdam. They do like their cute animals!

Interesting! This rabbit motif can also be found on many tiles from this period. Trained pottery painters would often have a set of stock motifs that they would use again and again.
    I see!
  • We've noticed a lot of rabbits on the blue and white pottery. So cute! Like on the bowl with under-plate.

Very cute indeed! Dedham was known for their affordable tableware in an Arts and Crafts style: uniting functional design with hand-painted decoration. This rabbit pattern was an early one of their designs and was very successful. They even used a rabbit in their trademark!
