Portrait Bust on Plinth

Brooklyn Museum photograph

Object Label

Large independent busts are rare among Wedgwood's output, and polychrome ones such as this are even more unusual. Painted ceramic busts of both religious and secular subjects were produced in Italy beginning in the Renaissance. The back of the bust is inscribed with its title and is seemingly a unique example of a polychrome allegorical female bust by Wedgwood.
