Jiang Shijie

Object Label

The three poems accompanying this simple scene express Jiang Shijie’s mourning for the Ming dynasty (defeated by the Manchus in 1644), his parting from a friend, and a return home at sunset after a leisurely drinking party. The verses infuse the image of a weeping willow and empty pavilion with a nostalgia that ranges in intensity from deep regret to light-hearted memories of a good time just past.
