Skeleton Study

Brooklyn Museum photograph
Object Label
When Daniel Huntington made this drawing, he was a highly regarded painter in New York’s cultural world. Portraiture was his dominant output, but here his technical expertise as a draftsman is evident. Skeleton Study is based on the figure of a dancing male faun from a Hellenistic sculpture. Knowing the correct structure of the skeleton underlying the body’s flesh is central to anatomical drawing and a key principle in the academic tradition.
