    MARKINGS On the under side: "K" for the years 1785-1786, leopard's head crowned, lion passant; also maker's mark in script: "H.B." in a rectangular cartouche with rounded corners (for Hester Bateman, London, active 1774-1789).

    CATALOGUE DESCRIPTION One of pair of Jewish ceremonial cups, silver with gilt wash interior, circular form, bowl engraved on the exterior with nineteenth-century inscriptions in Hebrew. Inscription within an oval panel of bright-cut engraving, reads: "the blessing over the wine" (or literally "goblet of blessing"). Around center Hebrew inscription reads: "He who deepeth the precepts will never know of any evil thing." Cups intended for use in Jewish circumcision.
