The Pilgrims of Emmaus on the Road (Les pèlerins d'Emmaüs en chemin)

Jesus also appears to two of his disciples on the road to Emmaus. Not able to recognize him, they tell the seeming stranger of Christ’s death and his subsequent mysterious disappearance from his tomb. Though they had believed him to be the Messiah, they confess to doubts, as he “should have redeemed Israel,” as Luke recounts, or freed the Jews from the rule of the Romans. As they walk on toward their destination, the stranger instructs his companions on the ancient prophecies regarding the Messiah.

In a later scene, when Jesus joins them for a meal at their destination and breaks bread with them, they do recognize him, before he disappears from their presence.
