Handspun commercial wool, commercial cotton
late 19th century
width: 4 1/8 in. (10.5 cm); length: 57 in. (144.8 cm) (show scale)
Estate of Stewart Culin, Museum Purchase
This belt is part of the Zuni outfit worn by Frank Hamilton Cushing. This belt was part of an original package of clothing given to Cushing from the Zuni Governor's wife. Although Cushing wore the costume daily almost as a metaphor for how close he was to the Zuni people he actually was noticeable as at that time most Zuni's had adopted wearing white cotton or calico shirts and dark pants and only wore these shirts and sashes on special occasions.
