Music

Thomas Wilmer Dewing

Brooklyn Museum photograph

Object Label

Music is one section of a two-panel decorative screen inspired by Japanese furnishings popularized by the Aesthetic Movement. Thomas Wilmer Dewing’s musician, dressed in Grecian robes and surrounded by an idyllic landscape, may be read as an allegory of nature’s soothing effect on the body and soul. For the wealthy businessmen who were Dewing’s greatest patrons, such ethereal scenes may have offered a reprieve from the demands of modern industry.
