Spring Blossoms

Winslow Homer

Brooklyn Museum photograph

Object Label

In this image, a group of happy city and country dwellers enjoys the benefits of the grafter’s skills in the spectacular blooming tree that now arches protectively above them (and which will later bear further bounty in the form of fruit). The combination of blooms and fragrance induces spring fever; adults meditate in a dreamy state while the children lounge about. Homer participates in this idyllic scene by playfully emblazoning his initials on the sail of a toy boat plying the waters in the trough.
